INTRODUCING ME

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Hello, my name is Marisa. My preferred pronouns are she/her.

I am a Latine/a/x, Mexicana, a mother to an adorable three year old. I am a newly enrolled student at the University of Washington!  Further and foremost, I am a reader ♥

My love for reading, at its core, exists because of my dad’s passion for books.

As a child he would read to me in the most animated way, adding voices and sound effects, because of how amazing storytime was I became an avid reader myself; I recall our trips to the library fondly.

Our local library had two levels. As soon as we made our way through the doors we would go our separate ways in which I would go up the stairs to the children’s section. In the children’s section, I recall the seemingly endless rows of books. I couldn’t wait to find my next story; my next adventure.

As I got older I found that I preferred certain genres to others;

I would always reach for a Nancy Drew book (I was determined to read them all in order), or I would find myself in the fantasy/fairy tale section. There are stories that have stuck with me so vividly, but I sadly can’t recall their titles. What I do remember is my love for those stories and the joy they gave me as I escaped into them.

The books that continue to capture my attention are those of witches, of mystery and of butt-kicking womxn protagonists. Today I aim to read more diversely as I believe in the importance of representation. With representation there is understanding, there is empathy. With representation there is a connection and the feeling of being seen. I aim to read diversely so that I can break down barriers and be a bridge to anyone who might feel alone. A lot of pressure to put on books right? Maybe, but I think they’re our most valuable tools.

As I begin my endeavor to become a librarian I consider everything that I want to do as a librarian.

I want to help create readers and to teach those young readers what can be accomplished, who they could be, that they matter. The world of books has always been there for me and I want everyone to find the same sort of comfort. To learn and to grow from what they read. To create and understand. To dream beyond all capacities.

Here’s to a wonderful reading journey, I hope you’ll join me as I tackle my never ending tbr and work toward librarinaship.

Happy Reading,

The Bookworm Queen
